KVM 1 is the cheapest private server on Hostinger's list, priced right up against shared hosting plans. But they are fundamentally different products, and confusing the two is the most expensive mistake in this category.
One-line verdict: excellent value if you know Linux, and a poor choice if you do not — however tempting the price looks.

The condition to read before the price
A private server comes with no control panel and no maintenance. What you buy is a bare machine with Linux and a root password. You are the one who:
- installs the web server, the database, and PHP
- configures the firewall and SSL certificates
- applies security updates every month
- fixes the outage when it happens, at whatever hour it happens
If you read that list and felt comfortable, the rest of this review is for you. If you felt uneasy, go to Unlimited at EGP 139 and do not look back — a neglected, unpatched server is far more dangerous than a slow shared host.
An unpatched server is not only your problem: it becomes somebody else's tool. Security is the root owner's responsibility.

Here is a real advantage for servers: shared plans renew at up to 2.5× while this is under double. Your cost after the promo stays predictable, and that is a benefit comparisons always forget.
What can you do with 4 GB and one core?
Quite a lot, if the load is light and predictable:
- one or two WordPress sites with moderate traffic and caching
- a small API or a Node/Python service for your project
- a staging environment that mirrors production
- a bot or scheduled jobs running continuously
- a private file or Git server for a small team
The single core is the real constraint, not the memory. Four gigabytes is comfortable, but one core means two heavy simultaneous processes will contend. Anything CPU-bound — image compression, video encoding, build pipelines — will be slow.
Where it wins
Root access at shared-hosting money. Complete freedom over software and versions.
Guaranteed resources. No noisy neighbour. The core and the memory are yours.
A gentle renewal. 1.7× against 3.7–2.5× on the shared plans.
AMD EPYC. A modern server processor with solid single-core performance.
Where it falls short
One core is a low ceiling. It is the first wall you will hit.
Weekly backups. And here it is more dangerous than on shared hosting: one bad command can wipe the system, and the snapshot may be six days old. Set up your own backups on day one.
No control panel. No cPanel, no hPanel. If you want one, you install it.
Time is a cost. Two hours a month of maintenance is not free.

Yes, if you:
- are a developer or engineer comfortable on a Linux shell
- want a full environment for a project or two at the lowest cost
- need software that shared hosting will not allow

KVM 1 is an excellent doorway into servers for anyone with the skill: 4 GB and root at shared-hosting prices is a genuine bargain, and its merciful renewal makes it cheaper over the long run than many shared plans. Its one flaw is that it asks you for work. If you are ready to do that work, it is the best-priced thing in its class; if you are not, every dollar in it is wasted.
